  • Why don't we just build a window? Part Six...

Or... ''You can never own too many clamps.''   Nick's been busy the past few weeks using up all the salvaged fir we had left.  There's enough wood for the sashes, but we'll have to buy wood for the frames. He glued up all the pieces, put them through the planer, and then cut them to size. He then started milling all the joints and ...

  • Built ins

After reading the featrued story on House Blogs by Jeanne ''Built-In... Form and Function'' , I began thinking about what built-ins we have done and which are my favorite. (Or favorite so far, as we've got a lot of house left that we haven't re-furbished.)  So far my favorites are the built-in drawers under the nook seats and the garbage ...

  • What are you most happy about with your home?

Aimee at Stylish Nest    wrote a post about going green.  Her questions, ''Are you trying to go green in your home? Have you found any great sites or products to help you do it?'' got me to thinking.  There are quite a few things we've done  (kept as much as the original fir flooring, pulled it up, cleaned up the ...

  • What to do about the windows

For a long time Nick was planning on trying to refurbish the windows on the first floor which are original to the house and we would replace the aluminum-clad windows that are on the second floor that were installed in the 60's. But now that we are on year three of the first floor renovation, we've decided that it might be best to put new ...

  • It's a miscellaneous weekend

We don't have any huge plans this weekend, just little stuff.  This morning we're going to clean the porch off (again) so Atticus has a safe place to play outside. Nick installed a gate so Atticus can't go down the stairs. (Thanks Gloria & Gary for the gates!) What else is on our list?install other gatesinstall trim around the ...

  • Holiday

First off, thank you to all the troops that our currently serving our county, all those who have, and special rememberance for those who died serving their country.  No, we haven't been on holiday for the past few weeks, so I thought I'd give a quick update. The concrete countertops are complete and installed. We'll try to get some good ...

  • Varnish, varnish, varnish

Well, I'm done varnishing the overhead cabinets by the sink.  I think I'm going to put an extra coat on the rest of them, since they will see a bit more use. Then I can put the shelf liner on and put things away. It's not the most exciting work, but it means that we're one small step closer to putting on the countertops, then the cabinet ...

  • Details take time

We have been making progress lately, but it seems like the finishing details take so long. The nook is 90% done. Nick has to make the drawer fronts, we need to paint the windows, and then do a final coat of varnish and paint on the entire nook. The last thing will be to pick out a light fixture, but that will be a quick project. We painted the ...

  • Nook progress

I haven't made any progress towards varnishing the baking center cabinets, unless you count cleaning the kitchen. But Nick's been working on the breakfast nook. He had me sit down to see if I liked the angle of the bench & it seemed perfect. I'll take some pictures as soon as he lets me back in the kitchen. (I'm not supposed to peak at the ...

  • Bring out the sandpaper

We're staying in town for Thanksgiving next week & my mind is beginning to wander. What will we be able to accomplish? I'm hoping to take out the sandpaper and varnish and finish the face frames of the cabinets. That way, when Nick's finished building the cabinet doors, the frames will be all ready to go. I've been so tempted to ''unpack'' the ...
